If you are diagnosed with diabetes one of the first people you will be advised to see a nutritionist or a dietitian. They are usually based on your local medical center and will be part of your diabetes team.
To hear that you suffer from diabetes - whether Type 1 or Type 2 is always a shock. And limitations on what can and can not eat, and the need to lose weight, can be overwhelming at first.
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two years ago and since then have done several courses on nutrition in relation to the disease. Unfortunately, it is all too easy to give in to temptation. Occasionally I let myself now and then a cake or cookies, and about once a month to enjoy some baked chips.
But thinking about the effects of diabetes on my general health in the future, I myself discipline about diet and weight loss. In truth, if you are carrying too much weight could lead to more serious diseases in the coming years. It's much better to your diet and diabetes now manage.
Your meals should be planned and must be filled with food, but not loaded with carbohydrates. Depending on your weight and overall health, a dietitian can provide a meal plan that meets the daily needs of a healthy diet and help you lose weight.
One of the main problems with the meal if you have diabetes is to make sure you have enough to eat, so your blood sugar to drop too low. Regular blood tests are essential, because you need to get your blood sugar levels to see if peaks in your readings, which may be related to the food you eat.
If the recommended diet plan, but it's not working for you because you are always hungry and your blood sugar reading is too high or too low, check with your healthcare team. They can advise you on the phone to make immediate changes and then make an appointment for your diet plan revision control.
Your dietitian may also recommend replacements for your favorite foods. Lose weight with diabetes need not be a chore. Just because you are a diabetic it does not mean you can not some of your favorite foods to enjoy.
Portions are very important when trying to lose weight. A good idea is to serve your meal on a pudding-sized plate instead of a plate. (A smaller proportion, but it looks just as great on a smaller plate!)
In reality there are not many foods that you can not have as a diabetic - but that is absolutely loaded with carbohydrates, as long as you plan your meals accordingly, get plenty of exercise and eat in moderation.
Course ideas change as new research comes along, but your dietitian or nutritionist will update as soon as they are published. Trying to follow their advice and food combine in the way you learned your diabetes support team.
Immediately contact your dietitian for advice if you are unsure about any aspect of your diet or medication. And always waiting to hear from them before making changes in your diet or medication.
